and then she snapped: big boy bed

big boy bed

Two weeks ago Charlie decided he could get out of his crib. So I poured myself a glass of wine put on my mean mommy voice and told him that was NOT ok. But he continued to climb out time and again. So after a couple of days of this I decided if I was going to have to train him not to get out of his bed it might as well be a bed that he couldn't hurt himself getting out of. So I went in search of a "big boy bed". Found one on Craigslist (don't you just love Craigslist?) for $30 bucks. So Chris and I picked it up one evening after a date night. (Nice date night, huh?). We got him a toddler bed, which just uses his crib mattress, and we got home, set it up and he got to sleep in it that first night (yes, our date nights often end early)! We made a big deal out of how it is for big boys only and he needs to stay in it and not get out until we get him. Which didn't really work, until we set up the consequences of getting out.

You get out of your bed, you don't get hot milk. Period. And dude, this kid LOVES hot milk. So it works. Mostly.

But please, don't be fooled by the smiles. Big boy beds are not all fun and games. Sometimes he goes to bed like a champ, and calls for me in the morning. And other times? (Like right this very minute? Naptime is SUCKING). And other times I wake up with a toddler in my bed that I didn't put there. And then there is no hot milk in the morning, or after nap. Which sucks for everyone, because, well, Charlie really likes hot milk.

I've currently got the crib for sale on Craigslist, so there's no going back now. He's two and a half, which I'm guessing is a little on the early side of average for the transition. How about those of you with toddlers? Still in a crib? How'd your transition go?

  1. I still remember that period with our "baby" who is now 4,5years. Our boys have the same room and this little brother didn't stay at his bed at all. :P

  2. He is still in his crib, but we just got his toddler bed today...little brother is getting stuck in his mini crib pretty much daily, so it's gonna happen sooner than later

  3. He is totally adorable.

I love that he is such a cutie about his hot milk... I'm sure his future wife will fawn over this sweet post :)

  4. This transition was a piece of cake with my daughter (like most things...I've been told she was a fake child)...it was a pain with my boy - he was in a borrowed crib and the owner had another baby (the nerve) so the transition was forced upon us! He was a climber...so crib/bed/cage he probably would have found a way out. He was around 2...so bribery was all that worked and was mostly food/treat related!

  5. Oh, I am dreading that stage. For now (age 20 months) we are still in the crib. I have a feeling it won't be long, but I will fight it as long as I can! Good luck to you, and keep us posted on how it goes!!

  6. Although it has been a zillion years ago....I remember that my daughter was no problem at all. My son, however was just 16 months old and climbed out of his crib every time I put him in it. Not sure how I broke him of it but I do remember getting him a big boy bed quickly. He was always the first to be up in the morning and into everything. I wish I could be of more help. Your Charlie is such a beautiful little boy.

  7. We are moving in a few weeks so we decided why not just blow our 2-year-old's mind all to pieces by transitioning him to his toddler bed while we're at it. I have caught him on several occasions teetering perilously on the railing of his crib and I figure I would rather him fall 4 inches from a toddler bed than 3 feet from a crib railing. I'm planning on hating life for a few weeks and like you, I feel it's a little early but it's really a safety concern at this point. Good luck!

  8. Both of my boys were out of their cribs before they turned one and they have never napped :( despite my best efforts. I tried the toddler bed, but they just seemed to always roll out of it and I ended up putting a twin mattress and box spring on the floor with a rail. They both slept great that way. Good luck. I love the pictures!

  10. We moved Brayden on his second birthday- seamless transition for the most part. A couple of early morning wake ups just for water, but overall, no big deal. Amazing how when they start climbing out of a crib, we put them in a bed that CAN'T contain them. Shouldn't it be the opposite? (totally kidding... kind of.)

  11. My little one just turned two yesterday and she hasn't been able to climb out of her crib yet. Our crib mattress is super low and she is pretty small so I don't think it will be happening anytime soon. I'm not in any hurry to make the transition, she sleeps so great right now! I wouldn't want to mess with that :o) I'm sure I'll have some posts to share, though, when I do decide to transition her to the BIG girl bed!

  13. Aaaak! Nervous! Our daughter is the opposite and climbs into her bed, or plunges into it really. We are switching her next weekend. Almost 2 and 1/2. My son was one or alil over one when we switched him. I rushed everything. No bottle before one, switch bed etc. I got lucky but I am
    Scared to transition my
    Daughter! He looks so
    Happy in his new big
    Boy bed
